Paronychia, pronounced pahr-uh-NIK-ee-uh, manifests as an infection affecting the skin surrounding a fingernail or toenail. Symptoms typically include swelling, redness, and pain in the affected area, often accompanied by the formation of a pus-filled blister, known as an abscess.
In most cases, paronychia is not severe and can be managed effectively at home. However, there are instances where the infection may escalate, potentially spreading to other parts of the finger or toe, necessitating medical intervention.
It’s uncommon for children to experience paronychia in their toes, except in cases of ingrown toenails. However, fingernail paronychia remains one of the most frequently encountered hand infections.
